About the Lab

The AI Physical Science Lab is led by Prof. Suk-yool Jung of the Department of Sports Medicine and the Department of AI Healthcare Convergence at the Graduate School, and it combines AI and data analysis with research on exercise physiology, rehabilitation, and functional exercise to identify exercise prescriptions suited to each individual. The lab has experimentally tested the effects of virtual reality-based spatial perception training on brain function, balance, and lower limb muscle activity, as well as the effects of combined exercise and functional exercise on physical fitness and EEG activity. It holds patents on a portable gait correction and stride guidance device and on a virtual reality-based upper limb rehabilitation training system, and it is expanding into research that uses large-scale health data, such as studies of the relationship between physical activity levels and chronic disease risk. Going forward, the lab plans to pursue two core projects with its graduate students: AI for personalized exercise recommendation and effectiveness analysis based on personal exercise records, and the prediction of functional longevity from the strength training data of middle-aged adults.

Research Areas

  • 01

    Exercise physiology and obesity management

Effects of exercise on physical fitness and metabolic health and easy-to-use field assessment criteria such as indicators for predicting metabolic syndrome

  • 02

Brain function and balance assessment and virtual reality training

Effects of virtual reality spatial perception training and rope ladder functional exercise on EEG activity, dynamic balance, and lower limb muscle activity

  • 03

    Rehabilitation and functional exercise programs

Development of a gait correction and stride guidance device and a virtual reality upper limb rehabilitation training system, and analysis of the effects of combined exercise programs for athletes and the general public

  • 04

    AI-based healthcare convergence

Large-scale data analysis of the relationship between physical activity levels and chronic disease risk, and convergence research that interprets exercise records and health data with AI

Research Plans

  • 01

AI for personalized exercise recommendation based on personal exercise records

A closed-loop recommendation system that learns from individual exercise records and fitness measurements to recommend the next workout, then measures the effect of the recommended exercise to refine the model

Related development on campus: the CHA University Graduate School of Sports Medicine was selected in 2026 for a Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism technology development project on the use of personal exercise records (3 years, KRW 2.69 billion)
  • 02

Strength training data of middle-aged adults and functional longevity

Analysis of the exercise records, usage patterns, and health data of people in their 40s and 50s accumulated in a mobile strength training service to predict the effects on strength maintenance and frailty prevention

Industry–academia collaboration with a mobile strength training service company in progress
  • 03

Prediction of exercise effects from wearable signals

Models that combine wearable signals such as heart rate, blood pressure, and sleep with exercise records to predict individual exercise effects and the risk of overtraining

  • 04

    Joint AI research

Joint papers, patents, and research projects with the AI Forecasting Analytics Lab, the department chair's lab, applying AI methods to this lab's data and research questions

Joint research outputs to be added to the output lists on this page
